MOGADISHU, (HAN) — Three political associations in Somalia — Xaqsoor, Dhulka, and Samadoon — have announced their withdrawal from the ongoing electoral consultation process with the government, according to a statement released Wednesday by Xaqsoor Party Chairman Abdirahman Yusuf Ali Ainte.

Mr. Ainte explained that the decision followed the parties’ conclusion that the government-led consultation process “lacked transparency, inclusiveness, and genuine dialogue.” He accused government representatives of dominating discussions and ignoring critical concerns regarding the upcoming elections, including voter registration, political rights, and fair representation.

“We have been participating in good faith, hoping for a fair and inclusive dialogue on the electoral process,” Ainte said. “Unfortunately, the process has been one-sided and contrary to the principles of consultation and consensus on which Somalia’s democracy depends.”

The three associations were among several emerging political organizations engaged in talks with the government over electoral reforms and the scheduling of political association and presidential elections. Their withdrawal is expected to complicate efforts to finalize an election roadmap and could heighten political tensions in the country.

Disputes over election laws and party registration have repeatedly delayed polls and strained relations between the government and opposition groups.

Government officials have not yet issued a public response to the parties’ decision.

On the other hand, this press release from the three parties comes as the government, led by Hassan Sheikh, is currently engaged in efforts to hold a one-person, one-vote election in the country, in which it positions itself as the main mediator.
