NAIROBI — The Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madoobe), has held a meeting in Nairobi with his Kenyan counterpart, Moses M. Wetang’ula, as part of efforts to strengthen parliamentary cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

During the talks, Speaker Wetang’ula congratulated Mr. Madoobe on his role as Chair of the East African Community (EAC) Parliamentary Speakers’ Forum, as well as Somalia’s growing engagement within the regional bloc. He also praised Somalia’s recent election of representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), describing the move as a significant step in the country’s integration into regional institutions.

Speaker Madoobe extended condolences to the Kenyan Parliament and people following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, expressing solidarity with the nation during its period of mourning.
He also used the occasion to invite the Kenyan Speaker to the EAC Speakers’ Summit, which Somalia is set to host in May 2026.

The two leaders discussed a range of issues aimed at enhancing cooperation between the Somali and Kenyan legislatures. These included the establishment of a joint parliamentary friendship committee, the exchange of experience and expertise between lawmakers, and broader efforts to strengthen institutional collaboration.

The meeting was attended by senior Somali officials, including the Secretary-General of the House of the People, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdulle (Jaabiri); Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle; and the Director-General of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Yusuf Hassan.

The visit marks a continued effort by Somalia to expand diplomatic and parliamentary ties within the East African region as it deepens its role within the EAC.
