MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, has officially appointed Maryan Ali Abukar as the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Family and Human Rights of the Federal Government of Somalia. The announcement was made on Tuesday, marking a significant step in the government’s efforts to strengthen leadership and improve service delivery in social welfare and human rights.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the decision was based on Maryan’s extensive experience, professional expertise, and commitment to public service. In her new role, she will be responsible for assisting the ministry in formulating and implementing policies aimed at protecting human rights, supporting families, and empowering vulnerable groups, including women and children.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said the appointment is part of broader efforts to enhance governance and institutional efficiency across Somali government agencies. Officials noted that strengthening the Ministry of Family and Human Rights is a priority for advancing social services and promoting human rights standards nationwide.
Maryan Ali Abukar is expected to assume her duties immediately, focusing on initiatives that include: enhancing legal protections for women and children, promoting family welfare programs, and coordinating with international partners and local organizations to deliver support to vulnerable communities.
Analysts say the appointment reflects Somalia’s ongoing commitment to improving social welfare and human rights governance, particularly in a country where post-conflict recovery, gender equality, and child protection remain pressing challenges.
“This appointment highlights the government’s determination to ensure that Somali families receive the support they need, and that human rights remain central to national development,” a senior official from the Prime Minister’s Office said.
Maryan’s new position also positions her to collaborate with other government ministries, civil society organizations, and international agencies, advancing Somalia’s policies on family welfare, child protection, and human rights advocacy at both national and community levels.
