Mogadishu – Somali police have arrested a man accused of severely assaulting his wife in a disturbing domestic violence case that has sparked widespread anger on social media.
The arrest took place in the Deyniile district of Mogadishu, where officers detained the suspect, identified as Mohamed Abdullahi Ali, during a targeted operation. Authorities stated that he will be swiftly brought to justice.
Ali is accused of brutally beating his wife, Khadro Abdullahi Mahmoud, in an incident that was reportedly captured on video. The footage, which shows the victim in distress, has gone viral across Somali social media platforms, prompting calls for accountability and justice for survivors of gender-based violence.
“This case is being taken seriously, and the suspect will be brought before the courts as soon as possible,” a police spokesperson said.
This is not the first time Somali police have taken action against domestic abusers. Just last week, in the Hamarweyne district, officers arrested a soldier after a video surfaced online showing him physically assaulting a woman.
Activists and human rights defenders continue to call for stronger protections for women and harsher penalties for perpetrators of domestic violence in Somalia, where such incidents are often underreported or ignored.
The Somali Police Force has vowed to maintain vigilance and ensure justice for victims of gender-based violence.
