MOGADISHU – Somalia’s elite police unit, the Haramcad Special Forces, say they have successfully foiled an attack by the Al-Shabaab militant group that was aimed at the capital, Mogadishu.
In a statement issued late Monday, the Haramcad unit confirmed that their forces disrupted an attempted assault in the Kaxda district, where militants were allegedly preparing to fire mortars toward the city.
“Tonight, the Haramcad Special Forces successfully thwarted an attack planned by Al-Shabaab, who were preparing to launch mortar shells into the capital,” the statement said.
The operation reportedly took place between the Kaxda cemetery and the Maracade area, located south of Mogadishu.
Security officials say the swift response by the Haramcad unit prevented potential civilian casualties and damage in the city. The statement added that security forces are continuing search operations to pursue any remaining militants in the vicinity.
Al-Shabaab has not yet commented on the incident.
