MOGADISHU — Political tensions have escalated in Somalia after the cancellation of a planned trip to Egypt by Mogadishu Mayor and Banadir Region Governor Yusuf Hussein Jimale (Madale), amid reports of internal disagreements within the ruling political camp led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Local media and political sources said the trip was abruptly called off following instructions from senior federal officials. The cancellation has been widely interpreted by analysts and opposition figures as a political setback for the Banadir regional administration and a sign of growing internal power struggles within the government.

According to multiple sources familiar with the matter, President Hassan Sheikh is considering appointing a new governor for the Banadir region from the Habar Gidir clan, specifically the Saleeban sub-clan. While no official decision has been announced, the reports have fueled speculation and political debate in Mogadishu.

Opposition figures claim the move reflects an attempt to consolidate political support within key constituencies ahead of future political processes. Supporters of the administration, however, say any potential changes would be aimed at improving governance and security in the capital.

The Banadir region holds strategic political importance, as Mogadishu serves as Somalia’s seat of government and economic hub. Control over the region has long been a sensitive issue, often reflecting broader clan and political dynamics within the federal system.

Neither the Office of the President nor the Banadir regional administration has issued an official statement explaining the cancellation of the Egypt trip or addressing the reports of a possible leadership change.

Political observers say the incident highlights ongoing tensions within Somalia’s ruling elite, as the government faces mounting pressure to address security challenges, economic hardship, and preparations for future elections.
