MOGADISHU — Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has congratulated the Somali people, particularly the sports community, after international football referee Omar Abdulkadir Cartan was named Africa’s Referee of the Year 2025 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
In a statement issued on Wednesday, President Mohamud praised Cartan’s achievement, describing it as a moment of national pride and a reflection of Somalia’s growing presence in international sports.
“I congratulate the entire Somali nation, especially the sports community, on the victory achieved by our international referee, Omar Abdulkadir Cartan, who has been awarded Africa’s Referee of the Year 2025 by CAF,” the President said.
President Mohamud highlighted Cartan’s dedication and professionalism, calling him a symbol of the talent and resilience found among Somali youth.
“Referee Cartan has elevated the name of the Somali nation and its young people by representing the country on global platforms. This historic achievement demonstrates the capability, discipline, and commitment of our youth,” the President added.
The award marks a significant milestone for Somalia, which has increasingly been making strides in international sports despite years of conflict and limited resources.
Sports officials say Cartan’s recognition serves as an inspiration for aspiring Somali athletes and referees and underscores the country’s potential to compete and excel on the global stage.
