NEW YORK, (HAN) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, delivered a speech at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, highlighting Somalia’s journey through years of hardship and the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen peace, security, democracy, and governance.
President Hassan Sheikh underscored the strides made in improving national security, intensifying the fight against terrorism, advancing democratic reforms, and finalizing the national Constitution. He praised the resilience and achievements of the Somali National Army and local community forces in combating extremist groups, while urging international partners to continue their critical support in this fight.
Emphasizing Somalia’s democratic transition, the President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to establishing a transparent, accountable political system. He announced that Somalia is on track to hold a historic one-person, one-vote election for the first time in 57 years, with voter registration already progressing smoothly and multiple political associations participating actively.
On economic development, President Hassan Sheikh outlined Somalia’s efforts to boost domestic revenue, improve financial governance, and leverage both regional and international trade opportunities.
The President also addressed broader global and regional issues, reaffirming Somalia’s support for Palestinian statehood, stressing the importance of international cooperation, and urging collective action to confront the challenges of climate change. He noted that climate impacts—especially droughts—have severely affected agricultural production and the livelihoods of millions of pastoralist families in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa.
