MOGADISHU, (HAN) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kenya following the death of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a veteran statesman and influential political leader in East Africa.
In an official statement, President Mohamud lauded Odinga’s pivotal role in advancing democracy, peace, and stability in Kenya and the wider region. He emphasized Odinga’s extensive experience in mediating conflicts and his tireless efforts to foster national cohesion and regional cooperation.
“On behalf of the Somali government and people, we share in the grief of our Kenyan brothers and sisters over the passing of Prime Minister Raila Odinga,” President Mohamud said. “He was among the leaders whose positive influence strengthened bilateral cooperation, promoted neighborly relations, and reinforced the longstanding historic ties between our two nations. His legacy of public service and commitment to democratic ideals will continue to inspire generations across the region.”
The Somali president also highlighted Odinga’s role in promoting dialogue and reconciliation during periods of political tension in Kenya. He described Odinga as a statesman whose leadership extended beyond national borders, contributing to peace initiatives and regional integration efforts in East Africa.
President Mohamud concluded by reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic and economic ties with Kenya, noting that the loss of such a prominent leader is felt deeply by both governments and peoples.
Raila Odinga, who served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, was widely recognized for his leadership in promoting democratic reforms and championing social and economic development initiatives. His passing marks the end of an era in Kenyan politics and leaves a void in regional leadership.
