MOGADISHU, (HAN) — In a historic move, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud flew on a Somali-owned plane from Addis Ababa to Mogadishu this week—the first time in 35 years a Somali leader has used a domestic carrier for an official trip.

The Premier Airlines flight, registered 60-PAA, was greeted with a formal ceremony at Aden Adde International Airport, drawing cheers from officials and citizens alike.
Experts and citizens say the move signals Somalia’s growing confidence in its own capabilities, supports local businesses, and marks a symbolic step toward reclaiming national pride lost during decades of conflict.
The Somali government recently purchased two Airbus A320 aircraft to revive Somali Airlines, which has been grounded since the 1991 state collapse. Transport Minister Mohamed Farah Nuuh confirmed the planes would begin flying under the national carrier within two months.
Many Somalis took to social media to celebrate the gesture, calling it a powerful sign of resilience and a boost for the country’s aviation sector. Beyond travel, the flight represents Somalia’s effort to restore a part of its identity and showcase progress on the world stage.
