MOGADISHU, (HAN) – Somalia’s Federal President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has reiterated that he has no plans to extend his presidential term, vowing that elections will be held on schedule.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Somali, President Hassan Sheikh stressed that his mandate ends on May 15, 2026, and he is ready to peacefully hand over power if he loses in the next elections.

“I was elected on May 15, 2022, and my term ends on May 15, 2026. I want elections to be held within that period, but I cannot predict what may come in the future,” he said.

The president expressed optimism that ongoing tensions between the federal government and some federal member states will soon be resolved, noting that indirect communication has already been established. He added that his administration has made significant concessions to strengthen cooperation with state governments.

He also emphasized that his government is ready to welcome Puntland and Jubbaland to the negotiation table to ensure inclusive elections.

President Hassan Sheikh reaffirmed that a one-person-one-vote election system and the completion of the national constitution remain among his key commitments to parliament, and efforts to implement them are already underway.
