MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held a telephone conversation with Mr. Massad Boulos, the Senior Adviser for African Affairs in the United States government, to discuss the strengthening of bilateral cooperation and shared strategic interests between the two nations.

According to a statement from the Somali Presidency, the discussion focused on enhancing the longstanding partnership between Somalia and the United States, particularly in areas of security, governance, and economic development. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing regional stability, counterterrorism efforts, and peacebuilding initiatives in the Horn of Africa.

President Hassan Sheikh expressed appreciation for the continued support of the United States in Somalia’s state-building process, noting that Washington has been a key partner in training Somali security forces, strengthening democratic institutions, and providing humanitarian and development assistance.

“The United States has played an essential role in helping Somalia rebuild and maintain stability,” President Hassan Sheikh said during the call. “Our cooperation reflects shared values and a mutual desire to see a peaceful and prosperous Horn of Africa.”

Mr. Boulos, on his part, reiterated America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Somalia’s government in its fight against terrorism, especially the ongoing campaign to defeat Al-Shabaab, while also emphasizing the importance of economic reforms and governance transparency.

During the conversation, President Hassan Sheikh also commended former U.S. President Donald Trump for his recent diplomatic initiatives, which he said had contributed to broader international stability and peace. The Somali leader highlighted the importance of sustained U.S. engagement in Africa, especially in promoting peace and economic development across the region.

The Somali presidency’s statement described the call as “cordial and constructive,” emphasizing that both sides had agreed to maintain close coordination on regional security issues and to explore new avenues for cooperation in trade, investment, and humanitarian assistance.

The conversation comes at a time when Somalia’s leadership is facing mounting political and security challenges, including ongoing operations against Al-Shabaab, tensions between federal and regional authorities, and pressure to deliver reforms ahead of upcoming political milestones.

Observers say that such high-level communications reflect the Somali government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen international partnerships and secure greater diplomatic and economic support amid internal and regional complexities.
