Cairo, Egypt — (Horn Africa News) — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia held a high-level meeting today in Cairo with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt, as part of efforts to bolster diplomatic and strategic relations between the two nations.

The discussions, which took place at the Presidential Palace in Cairo, focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in various fields, including security, diplomacy, education, health, and military collaboration. Both leaders underscored the importance of deepening ties between the people of Somalia and Egypt, and agreed to accelerate joint initiatives aimed at promoting regional stability and development.

In a significant gesture, President El-Sisi announced that Egypt will soon reopen its embassy in Mogadishu — a move that signals Cairo’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic engagement with Somalia. The Egyptian leader emphasized that the reopening of the embassy reflects Egypt’s prioritization of its partnership with Somalia, particularly in supporting the country’s reconstruction and stabilization efforts.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud welcomed Egypt’s active role in supporting Somalia’s security and development agenda. He expressed appreciation for Egypt’s continued assistance in key sectors, including military training, education scholarships, health cooperation, and diplomatic support in international forums.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the cooperation agreement signed in August 2024, pledging to expedite the execution of joint projects and deepen coordination on regional security challenges — especially the fight against terrorism. President El-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and efforts to achieve lasting peace and national development.

President Mohamud, in turn, thanked the government and people of Egypt for their warm hospitality and for their enduring solidarity with Somalia. He stressed Somalia’s determination to strengthen its strategic partnership with Egypt, which he described as vital for the stability and prosperity of both nations.

The meeting concluded with both sides expressing optimism about the future of Somali-Egyptian relations and the role of mutual cooperation in promoting peace and security in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
