ADDIS ABABA, (HAN) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Sunday in Addis Ababa to discuss ways to deepen bilateral relations and promote regional stability.

The leaders focused on enhancing cooperation between the two neighboring countries based on mutual respect, shared developmental goals, and a commitment to peace in the Horn of Africa.

President Hassan Sheikh emphasized the importance of collective efforts to combat terrorism and reiterated Somalia’s dedication to working with Ethiopia and other partners to ensure security and stability in the region.

“The two countries share a vision for peace, development, and strengthened neighborly relations,” a statement from the Somali presidency said. “Somalia remains committed to regional collaboration and initiatives aimed at fighting extremism and fostering political stability.”

The meeting also explored opportunities for economic cooperation, trade, and infrastructure development, signaling both nations’ intent to build stronger diplomatic and strategic ties. Analysts say such high-level engagements highlight the growing partnership between Somalia and Ethiopia, particularly in addressing security threats and promoting cross-border collaboration.

The leaders agreed to continue dialogue and implement joint initiatives to support peace and prosperity in the region.

According to local reports, a key aspect of President Mohamud’s visit Ethiopia may have been to counter the influence of Ahmed Madoobe, a prominent opposition figure challenging the Somali government.
