Mogadishu – On Wednesday, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held a meeting with opposition leaders at the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu, as part of the National Dialogue initiative that was launched earlier this month.

Participants included key opposition party leaders, former high-ranking officials, and influential political figures. According to a statement from the president’s office, the meeting aimed to encourage inclusive political participation and to create a united strategy for addressing national priorities.

President Mohamud stressed the importance of dialogue and collaboration, especially regarding the constitutional review, electoral reforms, national reconciliation, and the fight against terrorism.

“We must put national interest above political differences and work together for a stable and democratic Somalia,” said the president.

Opposition leaders appreciated the chance for open discussion and called for the process to be transparent and inclusive, with clear outcomes. Many emphasized the need for:
1. Expanded political freedoms
2. Institutional reforms
3. Stronger cooperation between the federal government and the federal member states.

This National Dialogue initiative is especially significant now, as Somalia:
1. Prepares for a new electoral framework
2. Works to strengthen federal institutions
3. Deals with security threats and economic hardships

The President’s office announced that the consultation process will continue in the coming days, including with:

1- Federal member state leaders
2- Civil society organizations
3-Youth and women’s groups
