MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has briefed regional state leaders and the mayor of Mogadishu on the government’s strategy to counter what he described as an attack on Somalia’s sovereignty following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.
The meeting, focused on safeguarding national unity and territorial integrity, was attended by the presidents of Southwest State, Hirshabelle, Galmudug and Puntland, as well as the governor of the Benadir region.
Mohamud said the federal government, in coordination with the Somali people, is pursuing an intensive diplomatic campaign grounded in international law to protect the country’s unity. He stressed the need for national cohesion to confront what he called “reckless ambitions” that threaten Somalia’s existence.
Regional leaders present at the meeting reaffirmed that Somaliland is an inseparable part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. They warned that the move could have serious security consequences for the region and pledged full support for the president’s domestic and international diplomatic efforts.
