MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said the federal government is prepared to make broad political compromises, including sharing power with leaders from the northern regions, as part of efforts to preserve the country’s unity and sovereignty.

In a national address, the president said the Federal Government of Somalia, working with citizens and international partners, is pursuing diplomatic and legal measures to counter what it sees as foreign interference and actions that threaten Somalia’s territorial integrity.

“The government will never retreat from defending Somalia’s unity, independence and territorial integrity,” Hassan Sheikh said.

He stressed that Mogadishu remains open to dialogue with leaders in the northern regions, commonly referred to as Somaliland, and is willing to listen to grievances and seek political solutions based on mutual respect and compromise.

“We are ready for anything that brings unity — even the sharing of power with our brothers in the North,” the president said.

Hassan Sheikh said he has held multiple contacts with Somaliland leaders and made efforts to halt fighting in the Sool region, but acknowledged that those initiatives did not yield the desired response.

“We tried to stop the conflict, but we were not sufficiently heard. Nevertheless, the solution lies within us,” he said.

The remarks come as Somalia’s federal government intensifies efforts to safeguard national unity while pursuing a durable political settlement through dialogue, aimed at ensuring a stable and unified future for the country.
