MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is expected to travel to Djibouti on Monday in his first foreign trip since Israel announced it had recognized Somaliland, Somali officials said.
The visit comes as regional diplomatic efforts intensify in response to the move, which Somalia has rejected as unlawful. In Djibouti, Mohamud is expected to engage in consultations linked to a possible summit of leaders from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), aimed at reaffirming support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Officials said the president is also expected to travel to Turkey later this week. Ankara is reportedly working to mobilize an emergency meeting of leaders from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address Israel’s announcement and coordinate a collective response.
Somalia has described the recognition of Somaliland as a dangerous precedent that undermines regional stability, warning that it could fuel tensions in the Horn of Africa.
