MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has urged young people in Mogadishu to actively participate in the upcoming local council elections, saying their engagement is essential to shaping the city’s future and strengthening democracy in Somalia.
The President made the remarks during a public address at Mogadishu Stadium, where he attended the final match of the Banadir Districts Football Tournament between Howlwadaag and War-Sheekh districts. The event attracted tens of thousands of spectators from across the capital, creating a festive atmosphere, according to the President, symbolized peace and unity in the city.
President Mohamud praised the youth and residents of Mogadishu for turning out in large numbers, describing the occasion as a powerful demonstration of stability and public confidence in the government’s ongoing security and reconciliation efforts.
“The thousands who came together yesterday to enjoy this football match are a sign of the peace and harmony we have built in Mogadishu,” the President said. “I want to see the same energy, enthusiasm, and unity during the upcoming local elections. Go out, vote, and choose leaders who truly represent your interests and your communities.”
The Somali leader congratulated both teams that reached the final, Howlwadaag and War-Sheekh, and particularly commended Howlwadaag District for winning the championship. He also extended appreciation to coaches, organizers, and supporters for promoting sportsmanship and unity through the tournament.
“This competition has achieved more than a sporting goal — it has brought people together, strengthened social bonds, and shown the world that Mogadishu is alive, peaceful, and full of hope,” he added.
President Mohamud highlighted that youth participation in sports and civic activities reflects Somalia’s progress toward stability and democratic governance after decades of conflict. He emphasized that upcoming local elections in Mogadishu will be a milestone in Somalia’s democratization process, marking the first time in many years that residents will directly elect their district council representatives.
The President urged young voters to take ownership of their future through democratic participation, noting that leadership at the local level is vital for development, service delivery, and accountability.
“The power to change your lives and communities is in your hands,” he told the youth. “You have the opportunity to elect leaders who can serve your interests, improve your neighborhoods, and represent your voices in government. Use your vote wisely and peacefully.”
The Banadir Districts Football Tournament, organized by the regional administration, is part of a wider initiative to promote community integration and peacebuilding through sports. Such events have become popular in recent years as symbols of Mogadishu’s gradual recovery from decades of insecurity.
The President’s call to youth participation comes as Somalia prepares for historic local elections, which are expected to strengthen decentralization and civic engagement in the capital and other major cities across the country.
