MOGADISHU – A unit of Somalia’s elite Danab Special Forces, supported by at least two vertical takeoff aircraft (helicopters), reportedly landed late Tuesday night in Buulo Fulaay, an area in the Bay region considered strategically important and believed to host militant strongholds.
Local residents told reporters that heavy gunfire was heard on the outskirts of the town shortly after the helicopters touched down, triggering heightened security concerns among civilians. Preliminary information indicates the forces carried out a well-coordinated and carefully planned operation targeting militant elements believed to be operating in the area.
As of publication, the Federal Government of Somalia has not released an official statement detailing the outcome of the operation. It remains unclear whether any militants were killed or captured, or whether weapons and equipment were seized during the raid.
There is also no confirmation on whether the operation was conducted solely by Danab forces or if they were supported by U.S. military personnel, who have previously assisted Somali special units in counterterrorism operations through air support and advisory roles.
Buulo Fulaay is widely viewed as a strategic location due to its geographic position and its alleged use by militant groups as a logistics and transit hub. Security operations in the area have intensified in recent months as part of broader efforts to degrade militant networks across southern Somalia.
Authorities are expected to provide further details as information becomes available.
