The Somali Ministry of Defense is reportedly preparing to enter a defense and security agreement with Serbia, aimed at strengthening the country’s military capabilities and internal security.

Under the proposed deal, Somalia could receive modern military training, advanced but affordable weaponry—including small arms, armored vehicles, and air defense equipment—as well as operational expertise in security and counterterrorism operations.

Serbia, with its military experience from the Balkan conflicts and access to modern defense technology, could assist Somalia in building and modernizing its police forces, armed forces, counterterrorism units, and border protection mechanisms.

Experts suggest that beyond military support, the partnership could open new avenues for diplomatic engagement, enabling Somalia to diversify its international alliances while maintaining existing regional and global relationships.

Since the collapse of Somalia’s central government in 1991, the current administration led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has made notable diplomatic strides, achieving significant partnerships worldwide.

However, officials caution that Somalia must carefully manage the partnership to avoid potential friction with some Western countries.

The proposed agreement has also sparked public debate on whether Somalia currently requires additional arms and military assistance at this stage of its security development.
