Jakarta – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Government of Somalia, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, held a key meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia, with the Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Dr. Kao Kim Hourn.
The discussion focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation between Somalia and ASEAN member states, particularly in areas such as trade, education, and overall collaboration.
Minister Abdisalam emphasized Somalia’s interest in gaining formal observer status within ASEAN, a move that could strengthen the country’s economic, political, and social ties with Southeast Asian nations.
In response, ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn warmly welcomed Somalia’s initiative to deepen its engagement with the bloc. He affirmed ASEAN’s readiness to expand cooperation with Somalia and acknowledged the strategic importance of Somalia, highlighting the potential mutual benefits of closer ties.
The meeting is part of Somalia’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to strengthen its international relations, especially with regions that hold economic and educational significance.
