MOGADISHU / LONDON — The Federal Government of Somalia and the United Kingdom have jointly launched a new global agenda on social protection, aimed at expanding safety net programmes in fragile and conflict-affected countries.

The initiative, titled “The Agenda for Peace, Stability and Resilience,” was unveiled during a high-level committee meeting on social protection for vulnerable states. It seeks to promote long-term peace and stability by strengthening systems that support communities facing conflict, poverty, and the impacts of climate change.

The launch was co-chaired by Rt Hon Baroness Chapman of Darlington, representing the UK government, and Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, on behalf of the Federal Government of Somalia.

According to a statement published by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Somalia is regarded as a leading example in building effective social protection mechanisms that help restore public trust in government institutions.

“Investing in social protection is an investment in peace, stability, and human dignity,” said Baroness Chapman and Deputy Prime Minister Jama in a joint statement.

The new global agenda will focus on expanding financial inclusion, improving access to basic services, and supporting vulnerable populations through targeted safety nets. It also aims to encourage international donors and development partners to coordinate efforts for sustainable recovery and resilience in crisis-affected regions.

Somalia’s participation in the initiative reflects its growing commitment to linking humanitarian aid with long-term development, as the country continues to recover from decades of conflict and economic hardship.
