MOGADISHU, (HAN) — The Somali National Army (SNA) has issued a stern warning against the unauthorized use of military uniforms, ranks, insignia, and related equipment in an effort to curb misuse and safeguard the integrity of the armed forces.
In a statement released on Saturday, the SNA command said that any individual found wearing or possessing military attire or symbols without authorization will face prosecution under military law.
“No civilian or unauthorized person is permitted to wear the uniform, ranks, or insignia of the Somali National Army. Violators will be prosecuted in accordance with the military code,” the statement read.
The army also directed a warning to business owners—especially garage operators—prohibiting them from painting, repairing, or servicing military vehicles, and from selling or offering equipment or services related to military transport.
According to the SNA, such activities not only violate national laws but also pose serious security risks, potentially enabling impersonation and other forms of abuse.
“All business entities and members of the public are hereby advised to avoid the sale, purchase, or use of any military symbols, uniforms, or equipment unless officially authorized,” the army command added.
The warning comes amid rising concerns over the misuse of military gear by individuals unaffiliated with the armed forces, a trend that has alarmed Somali security agencies.
The SNA concluded by urging the public to cooperate fully with authorities to uphold military discipline and protect the honor and reputation of the national army.
