Mogadishu -The Federal Government of Somalia has officially welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire agreement between the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the M23 rebel group, calling it a critical step toward restoring peace and stability in the war-torn eastern regions of the DRC.

In a press statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Somali government expressed its strong support for the ceasefire deal, viewing it as a promising development in efforts to end the long-standing conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced countless civilians in eastern Congo.

“Somalia welcomes the declaration of a ceasefire between the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 rebel movement,” the statement read. “We believe this is a positive and necessary step that will contribute significantly to the stabilization and security of the affected areas.”

The Somali government commended the mediation efforts that led to the agreement, particularly highlighting the diplomatic role played by the State of Qatar in facilitating the dialogue. The negotiations, which took place in Doha, were seen as a breakthrough in a series of regional and international efforts to de-escalate tensions and bring the warring parties to the negotiating table.

“Somalia deeply appreciates the mediation role played by the brotherly State of Qatar, whose significant efforts and commitment to peace were instrumental in encouraging both parties to engage in meaningful negotiations,” the statement added.

Looking ahead, Somalia urged both the DRC government and the M23 rebel group to honor the terms of the agreement and commit to its full implementation. The government emphasized that sustainable peace in the region will only be achieved through continued dialogue, mutual trust, and adherence to the commitments made during the peace talks.

“The Federal Government of Somalia calls on all involved parties to uphold the ceasefire in good faith, ensure its full implementation, and take further steps to resolve the root causes of the conflict through peaceful means,” the statement concluded.

The Somali government reiterated its readiness to support regional and international efforts aimed at promoting peace, stability, and development across the African continent.
