MOGADISHU, (HAN) – Somalia’s Ministers of Defense and Internal Security on Monday jointly attended a high-level meeting where the Federal Government formally endorsed the National Counter-IED Strategy aimed at tackling the threat of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The session was also attended by the National Security Advisor and representatives from the international community, who pledged technical support and guidance to strengthen Somalia’s security response.

Defense Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to boosting the capacity of the Somali National Army to prevent and respond to IED threats posed by terrorist groups. He described the new plan as a strategic framework designed to minimize civilian and property losses caused by such attacks.

Fiqi emphasized that the strategy will rely on close coordination among national security agencies, including the police, intelligence services, and other law enforcement bodies, to create an effective nationwide mechanism against IEDs. He also underscored the importance of international partnerships, stressing Somalia’s intention to work closely with allies for technical assistance and specialized training.

Both ministers praised the role of the Office of National Security’s Weapons, Ammunition and Explosives Monitoring Unit, which spearheaded the preparation and coordination of the plan. The unit is expected to play a vital role in implementing and monitoring the strategy.

The meeting forms part of broader federal efforts to enhance internal security and counter terrorism, as extremist groups continue to employ IEDs and other violent tactics against civilians and security forces.

In their closing remarks, the ministers urged all government institutions and security agencies to fully support the initiative and to engage communities in awareness campaigns to prevent the spread of IED threats across the country.
