MOGADISHU — Somalia Hosts Second National Justice Forum Focused on Inclusive Justice
The city of Mogadishu is hosting the second edition of the Somali Justice Forum, bringing together officials from federal and regional justice institutions, international partners, legal experts, and other distinguished guests. This year’s forum, held under the theme “Justice for All,” aims to strengthen the country’s judiciary and ensure that justice is accessible, fair, and impartial for all Somali citizens.
The two-day forum, now in its second day, has focused on key issues including judicial independence, accountability, and building public trust in the justice system. The discussions have explored strategies to improve transparency in court processes, reduce corruption, and ensure that Somali citizens can rely on legal institutions to protect their rights.
The forum is expected to conclude today with a closing address by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who is anticipated to outline national priorities for judicial reform and reaffirm the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.
Background: Somalia’s judiciary has faced significant challenges since the collapse of the central government in 1991. Years of civil conflict, weak institutions, and limited resources have left the legal system fragmented and often inaccessible to ordinary citizens. Over the past decade, the federal government, with support from international partners, has sought to rebuild the judiciary, standardize legal procedures, and strengthen courts at both federal and regional levels.
However, progress has been slow, and public confidence in the system remains limited. Forums such as this one are part of ongoing efforts to bridge gaps between the government, justice institutions, and the Somali people, promoting reforms that are transparent, accountable, and inclusive.
Participants in the forum are also providing recommendations on how to improve the delivery of judicial services, enhance professional standards among judges and court staff, and ensure equality before the law. Experts emphasized that building trust in the justice system is essential for broader peace and stability in Somalia, where access to justice has historically been uneven across different regions and communities.
The Somali Justice Forum represents an important step in the country’s long journey toward strengthening the rule of law and creating a judiciary capable of protecting the rights of all citizens.
