MOGADISHU – Somalia’s Ministry of Finance has launched a modernized tax collection system for vehicles, equipped with digital cameras to detect motorists evading government taxes.
Finance Minister Imam Ige announced that the new system is part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen national revenue and curb tax evasion in the transport sector.
According to the minister, Mogadishu currently has more than 60,000 vehicles in operation, but only about 25,000 are officially registered with the ministry. This means over half of the vehicles in the capital are not part of the tax system, significantly reducing government revenue.
The initiative aims to register all vehicles operating in Mogadishu through a digital database, minimize tax evasion, and boost state income from vehicle taxes.
Minister Ige urged citizens and drivers to fully cooperate with the system, underscored that public services depend heavily on tax contributions.
