MOGADISHU, (HAN) — The Federal Republic of Somalia has achieved a historic milestone after it was officially confirmed that the country will, for the first time, join the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA). This marks a significant step in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to fully integrate into the East African Community (EAC).
The Speakers of both Houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia have appointed a special committee tasked with preparing and selecting the representatives who will serve in the regional parliament.
The committee is chaired by MP Mohamed Abdullahi Hassan (Nux), with Senator Zamzam Ibrahim Ali serving as deputy chairperson. Other members include MP Abdi Ibrahim Warsame (Qowdhan), Senator Iftin Hassan Iiman (Baasto), and MP Guuleed Bihi Abdi.
The committee has been directed to begin work immediately and to prepare a list of qualified candidates vying for Somalia’s seats in the EALA. Once finalized, the list will be submitted to the Federal Parliament for approval and completion of the election process.
The Federal Government has pledged to provide all necessary resources and logistical support to ensure the process is completed efficiently and on time.
This development is seen as a historic advancement that strengthens Somalia’s political representation in the East African region. It underscores the country’s commitment to regional cooperation, integration, and partnership in pursuit of peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
Government officials have stated that Somalia’s participation in the East African Legislative Assembly will give the nation a stronger political voice and greater influence in defending national interests and advancing regional economic, security, and trade relations.
