MOGADISHU – The Somali Navy, in partnership with the Italian Hydrographic Institute, has officially inaugurated the Somali National Hydrographic Office (SOHO), a landmark initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s maritime safety, environmental protection, and management of marine resources.

The new centre will serve as the national hub for hydrographic data, including marine charts, coastal mapping, and oceanographic research. Officials say the establishment of SOHO marks a major step toward improving navigation safety, protecting Somalia’s territorial waters, and supporting the nation’s growing blue economy.

Speaking at the launch event, the Commander of the Somali Navy said the new institution would play a vital role in enhancing Somalia’s capacity to manage maritime information and ensure safer navigation in its waters.

“SOHO will enable Somalia to produce and manage its own hydrographic data, ensuring that our coastal and marine activities are guided by accurate, up-to-date information,” the Navy chief said. “This is essential for both national security and economic development.”

Representatives from the Italian Hydrographic Institute pledged continued technical support and training to help Somali experts build capacity in marine surveying, data analysis, and nautical charting.

The launch of SOHO is part of the Somali government’s broader efforts to modernize maritime governance, strengthen coastal security, and unlock the economic potential of the country’s vast maritime resources.

Officials say the new office will also contribute to international maritime cooperation, allowing Somalia to participate more effectively in global efforts related to ocean safety, climate monitoring, and sustainable use of marine resources.

Analysts describe the initiative as a significant milestone in Somalia’s recovery of full control over its maritime domain — an area that has long been affected by piracy, illegal fishing, and environmental degradation.
