Mogadishu — The Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Daud Aweys Jama, received the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Somalia, H.E. Wang Yu, at the Ministry’s headquarters today, marking a significant step toward strengthening cultural and media cooperation between the two nations.

During the meeting, both parties expressed their commitment to deepening the longstanding relationship between Somalia and China, with special emphasis on cultural exchange and media collaboration.

The Minister and Ambassador jointly visited the Historical Audio Archive of Radio Mogadishu, where experts from the National Archive briefed them on the current state of the archive and the Ministry’s plans to digitize the historical content.

Following this, the delegation toured the National Theatre and the Centre for Arts and Entertainment, where they received a warm welcome from the Waaberi National Troupe, led by Mr. Maki Haji Banaadir, Deputy Director and Acting Director-General of the Centre.

The visit to the theatre was part of a broader initiative aimed at restoring and modernizing the cultural institution, which plays a central role in preserving Somali literature, raising awareness, and promoting social integration.

As part of the cultural showcase, the Waaberi troupe performed a selection of Somali and Chinese songs, as well as traditional dances, symbolizing the cultural harmony between the two nations.

Minister Aweys expressed deep appreciation for Ambassador Wang’s visit and China’s consistent support to Somalia, particularly in the areas of culture and media. He emphasized the historical depth of the bilateral relationship, stating:

“Somalia and China share a deep-rooted friendship dating back to Somalia’s independence. We greatly value China’s continuous support, especially in cultural and media sectors. This year marks 65 years of diplomatic friendship between our two nations.”

He added, “The Ambassador’s visit to the National Theatre today is a clear symbol of the enduring ties and mutual respect between our peoples.”

Ambassador Wang Yu said he was delighted by the warm reception and cultural performances, praising the Waaberi troupe and affirming China’s dedication to continuing its cultural and media support for Somalia. He described the National Theatre as a cultural landmark of national significance.

To commemorate the occasion, Minister Aweys presented the Ambassador with two specially crafted artworks by Waaberi’s Fine Arts Department, one of which depicted the recent meeting between the Presidents of Somalia and China in Beijing.

The Minister was accompanied by senior officials, including the Director-General of the Ministry, Mr. Abdullahi Hayir Ducaale; Director of Media Strategy, Mr. Abdishakur Ali Ahmed; and Director of National Television, Mr. Mohamedkafi Sheikh Abukar.
