MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Minister of Public Works, Ayub Ismail, has been widely praised for his role in unifying lawmakers from the northwestern Awdal region, particularly in reinforcing their collective stance in support of the unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, according to political sources and community leaders.

Officials familiar with the matter say Minister Ayub led sustained political engagement aimed at ensuring that the names and parliamentary representation of Awdal lawmakers are not used — directly or indirectly — to advance separatist agendas or political positions that undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity.

“His efforts were focused on safeguarding constitutional responsibility and national unity,” said one senior political source who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. “The message was clear: Awdal’s representatives stand firmly with the unity of Somalia.”

According to multiple sources, Minister Ayub held a series of closed-door meetings over recent weeks with members of parliament from Awdal, as well as traditional elders, intellectuals, and community leaders. Discussions centered on national responsibility, respect for the federal constitution, and the role of elected representatives in moments of political uncertainty affecting the country’s future.

Participants in the consultations said the meetings helped align political views and reduce internal divisions, resulting in a clear and unified position reflecting the will of Awdal’s population within the framework of the Somali federal state.

Observers say the initiative comes at a sensitive time, as Somalia continues to navigate complex political debates over federalism, governance, and national cohesion. Analysts note that unity among lawmakers from strategically important regions such as Awdal carries symbolic and political weight at the national level.

Minister Ayub has not issued a formal public statement on the matter, but close associates say he views the effort as part of a broader commitment to strengthening Somalia’s institutions and protecting the country’s sovereignty.

Community leaders from Awdal have welcomed the outcome, describing it as a positive step toward reinforcing dialogue, representation, and national cohesion in a country still recovering from decades of conflict.
