MOGADISHU — Somalia has unveiled a new electronic visa (E-Visa) and electronic travel authorization system (eTAS), marking a major step in modernizing its immigration services. Officials confirmed Thursday that the system will become mandatory for all foreign arrivals beginning September 1, 2025.

The platform, accessible through the official portal www.evisa.gov.so, allows travelers to apply for and obtain visas online before arriving in Somalia.

“This modern system will make it easier for foreigners to apply for a visa from anywhere in the world and receive it within a short time,” said Isaaq Hassan Taakow, Director of Foreigners and Immigration at the Immigration and Citizenship Authority (ICA). He added that specialized staff have been trained to ensure the process remains efficient and transparent.

Authorities say the move will not only improve convenience for travelers but also strengthen national security, safeguard personal data, and boost government revenue. Internal Security Minister Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag noted that visa fees will now be deposited directly into the Ministry of Finance’s accounts, a shift aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability.

The e-Visa initiative places Somalia among a growing number of countries adopting digital immigration solutions as part of broader efforts to modernize governance, stimulate economic growth, and facilitate international travel.
