MOGADISHU – Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Saturday held a high-level meeting in Mogadishu with Chinese Ambassador to Somalia Wang Yu, as the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the long-standing ties between their countries.

According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, discussions centered on enhancing cooperation in areas such as politics, security, infrastructure development, humanitarian assistance, and regional stability.

Prime Minister Barre expressed gratitude for Beijing’s continued support to Somalia, noting China’s contributions in multiple sectors. He emphasized that Somalia values its partnership with China, describing it as a relationship that has stood the test of time and played a key role in Somalia’s state-building efforts.

“The Prime Minister thanked China for its unwavering support and reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to deepening the historic ties that bind the two countries,” the statement read.

For his part, Ambassador Wang hailed the Somalia–China partnership as “historic and resilient,” underscoring that the relationship is founded on mutual respect and friendship. He reiterated China’s readiness to support Somalia’s national development agenda through infrastructure projects, economic initiatives, and capacity-building programs.

The meeting comes at a time when Somalia is actively seeking to expand its diplomatic and economic partnerships as part of its broader strategy for national recovery and international integration. Analysts say stronger ties with China could play a significant role in supporting Somalia’s reconstruction, particularly in areas such as trade, investment, and development cooperation.

Somalia and China share a history of diplomatic relations dating back to the 1960s, and Mogadishu continues to view Beijing as a key partner in its path toward stability and growth.
