MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Ministry of Health has launched an urgent investigation into a distressing incident in which a Somali woman gave birth at the gate of Banadir Hospital in Mogadishu after reportedly being denied emergency medical assistance.

In an official statement issued on 7 November 2025, the Ministry said that Health Minister Dr. Ali Haji Adam had ordered a full review of the hospital’s CCTV footage and directed officials to collect a comprehensive report from the hospital management to determine exactly what happened.

“The Ministry is fully committed to safeguarding the health and safety of Somali mothers and newborns,” the statement said. “It is essential that an independent and transparent investigation be conducted to establish the facts.”

The Ministry added that if the investigation finds evidence of negligence, misconduct, or administrative failure by hospital staff or management, appropriate legal and disciplinary action will be taken against those responsible.

Meanwhile, the National Health Professionals Council confirmed that it had received footage of the woman giving birth on the roadside outside Banadir Hospital. The council described the incident as “deeply troubling” and said it had begun its own inquiry in cooperation with the Ministry.

“The Council, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, will conduct a formal investigation into this case and will share the findings with the public as soon as possible,” the statement read. “Necessary measures will be taken once the investigation concludes, God willing.”

The incident has sparked widespread outrage on Somali social media, with many citizens demanding accountability and better maternal health services. Banadir Hospital, one of Somalia’s largest maternity facilities, has faced repeated criticism over poor service delivery and overcrowding.
