DOHA — Somalia’s Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Prof. Salim Aliyow Ibrow, met on Wednesday with Qatar’s Minister of Labor during an official visit to Doha, as part of efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation and employment ties between the two countries.

During the meeting, the ministers discussed strategies to strengthen collaboration on labor issues, facilitate the legal deployment of Somali workers to Qatar, and improve recruitment processes to better match market demands. Officials said the discussions also focused on programs to enhance the skills and qualifications of Somali employees, ensuring they meet the requirements of Qatar’s labor market.

“Qatar has shown readiness to support Somalia in developing its workforce, improving vocational training, and creating employment opportunities that benefit both nations,” Prof. Salim Aliyow Ibrow said. He thanked the Qatari government for its ongoing assistance and emphasized the importance of cooperation based on shared interests and mutual benefit.

Both sides agreed to accelerate labor cooperation initiatives and expand legal, safe, and sustainable employment opportunities for Somali workers in Qatar. The agreement aims to ensure that employment programs are secure, transparent, and advantageous for citizens of both countries.

Analysts say the talks reflect growing ties between Somalia and Gulf nations in labor, trade, and development, as Somalia works to expand overseas employment opportunities for its citizens while Qatar continues to diversify its workforce.

The Doha visit also highlights Somalia’s broader diplomatic efforts to strengthen relationships with countries in the Middle East, which have historically been major destinations for Somali migrant workers.
