MOGADISHU – The Federal Government of Somalia has renewed a major agreement with TGS, the Norway-based global geo-data company, giving it continued rights to market and license offshore geophysical data from Somalia’s territorial waters.
The updated deal, signed through the Somali Petroleum Authority (SPA), extends an earlier partnership that allowed TGS to collect, process, and promote seismic and aeromagnetic data across Somalia’s offshore basin. Officials say the renewal strengthens ongoing cooperation and underscores TGS’s long-term commitment to supporting Somalia’s emerging energy sector.
TGS manages one of the largest geophysical data libraries in the region, providing international energy companies with essential information to evaluate the potential of Somalia’s offshore oil and gas reserves. The datasets now being marketed include:
- Over 46,000 km of modern 2D seismic data
- Nearly 50,000 km of aeromagnetic data
Industry experts note that such data is critical for companies weighing investment in Somalia’s numerous offshore blocks, many of which are being prepared for exploration licensing as part of the government’s broader effort to revive the hydrocarbons sector.
David Hajovsky, Executive Vice President of TGS, said the agreement’s renewal “demonstrates once again the company’s strong commitment to contributing to the Federal Government of Somalia’s petroleum licensing programme.”
The Somali government hopes that greater data accessibility and expanded international participation will help accelerate exploration, boost investor confidence, and ultimately unlock the country’s significant untapped natural resources.
