BELEDWEYNE — Somali anti-militant leader Ali Jayte Osman has urged civilians across the country to stay away from areas controlled by extremist groups, a warning widely seen as a precursor to a new, large-scale military offensive by the federal government.
Jayte, a prominent figure in Somalia’s fight against armed groups, said the government’s primary objective is to protect civilians while eliminating militants entirely. “The goal is to save the people and completely eradicate terrorism,” he said, stressing that civilian safety remains the top priority.
Security and military sources told Horn Africa News that the Somali government has decided to relaunch an intensified campaign against militant groups, with renewed momentum and international backing. The sources confirmed that Turkey is providing strategic support, including the deployment of a military aircraft to Mogadishu as part of expanded security cooperation.
The government has also appointed a new senior military commander, a move officials say is intended to reinvigorate frontline operations and improve coordination among Somali security forces.
Military planners are focusing particularly on the central and southern regions of Middle Shabelle, Lower Shabelle and Hiiraan, areas where militants continue to control pockets of territory. Officials say the planned operations aim to reclaim these areas and restore government authority.
The renewed campaign comes ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a period during which militant groups have previously increased attacks. Somali authorities say additional measures are being put in place to prevent planned assaults and protect urban centers and key infrastructure.
Turkey, a key ally of Somalia, has publicly encouraged Mogadishu to ensure that state authority extends beyond the capital. Turkish officials have emphasized that long-term stability cannot be achieved while militant groups remain active in large parts of the country.
Ankara, which has played a major role in regional security efforts elsewhere, including Syria, is now placing increased strategic importance on Somalia. According to security sources, discussions are underway about a more direct Turkish role in ongoing security operations, aimed at strengthening Somalia’s fight against militancy and safeguarding the country’s unity and sovereignty.
