MOGADISHU — The Somali government is preparing to deploy its largest-ever military contingent to the northeastern regions of the country, officials said, in a major security operation timed ahead of an anticipated visit by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The planned deployment is aimed at strengthening security, stabilizing volatile areas and reinforcing the federal government’s presence in the northeastern administration. Officials said the move is part of a broader strategy to consolidate federal authority, improve governance and address long-standing security concerns in the region.
Security sources, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said preparations are underway to mobilize and position the forces at key locations across the region. The troops are expected to secure major towns, strategic routes and government installations, while also supporting local security forces.
The deployment comes amid heightened political sensitivities and ongoing security challenges, including armed group activity and disputes between federal and regional authorities.
Analysts say the presence of a large federal force could significantly alter the security landscape, depending on how coordination with local administrations is handled.
Officials did not disclose the exact number of troops involved or provide a clear timeline for the operation. No formal statement has yet been issued by the Ministry of Defense or the presidency.
President Hassan Sheikh’s expected visit is widely seen as a signal of the federal government’s intent to assert stronger engagement in the region, as Somalia continues efforts to rebuild national security institutions and unify armed forces under a single command structure.
