MOGADISHU, (HAN) — The Federal Government of Somalia has announced plans to introduce a new electronic passport (e-passport) as part of a broader effort to modernize the country’s travel documentation and enhance global mobility for Somali citizens.

In a statement released by the Directorate of Immigration and Nationality, the agency said the initiative aims to produce a “third-generation” electronic passport that meets international security and technology standards. The new e-passport is expected to include biometric data, digital security chips, and other advanced features designed to prevent forgery and identity fraud.

Officials from the immigration department stated that the new system will be developed in consultation with Somali citizens and relevant stakeholders, ensuring that the process reflects national needs and international requirements. The move is also part of the government’s commitment to improving service delivery and promoting digital transformation across public institutions.

The Somali passport, which was reintroduced in 2013 after decades of civil conflict, has gradually gained international recognition over the past decade. Initially accepted by only a few countries, it is now recognized by an increasing number of nations, allowing Somali citizens greater freedom of movement.

According to officials, the introduction of the electronic passport will further boost Somalia’s global standing by aligning its travel documents with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) specifications. The upgrade will also help Somalia meet regional integration standards within the East African Community (EAC), which is expected to streamline travel and strengthen diplomatic and economic ties.

While the exact launch date and design details of the new passport have not yet been revealed, the Directorate of Immigration and Nationality confirmed that technical assessments and public consultations are already underway.

The new initiative marks a significant milestone in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to modernize its governance systems and rebuild institutions that were weakened during years of instability.
