MOGADISHU: Somalia is expected to stage a major military display on April 12, highlighting what officials describe as a significant strengthening of national defense capabilities—the most substantial since the collapse of the central government in 1991.

Preliminary information indicates that the Somali National Army will present a wide range of heavy military assets, including armored personnel carriers, artillery systems, and air force equipment. The event is seen as a signal of the government’s ongoing efforts to rebuild and modernize its armed forces after decades of conflict and instability.

Residents in Mogadishu have reported increased military activity in recent days, with convoys of troops and armored vehicles observed moving through key roads in the capital. Security preparations are visibly underway as authorities organize what is expected to be one of the largest military exhibitions in recent years.

While officials have not released full details, analysts suggest the display may also serve a strategic purpose—demonstrating the state’s readiness to confront security threats, including militant groups, and to assert greater control across the country.

The planned showcase comes at a time when Somalia continues to receive international support for security sector reform, with partners assisting in training, equipment, and counterterrorism operations.
