MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Ahmed Hassan Aadan, on Saturday held a high-level meeting in Mogadishu with Türkiye’s Ambassador to Somalia, Alper Aktaş, as part of efforts to deepen cooperation between the two nations in maritime development and the blue economy.
According to the Ministry, the talks were described as “fruitful and constructive,” focusing on expanding joint initiatives aimed at developing Somalia’s vast marine resources and strengthening technical collaboration in the fisheries sector.
During the meeting, the two sides reviewed progress made under previous bilateral agreements and explored new areas of partnership. Key discussion points included enhancing the protection of marine resources, scaling up capacity-building programmes for Somali fishermen, and exploring new investment opportunities within Somalia’s blue economy.
Ambassador Aktaş reaffirmed Türkiye’s long-standing commitment to supporting Somalia’s economic development. He pledged advanced technical training for Somali fisheries professionals, aimed at modernising fishing practices and increasing productivity across coastal communities.
In addition, Türkiye proposed launching fully funded postgraduate scholarship programmes (Master’s level) for Somali students in fields related to marine science, blue economy policy, and sustainable resource management. Turkish officials say the initiative will help Somalia develop a new generation of experts capable of contributing to long-term marine governance.
Minister Ahmed Hassan Aadan thanked the Turkish government for its continued support, describing the partnership as a crucial pillar in Somalia’s economic recovery.
