MOGADISHU, (HAN) – The Federal Government of Somalia has welcomed Egypt’s renewed commitment to supporting Somalia’s peace, security, and development, calling it a reaffirmation of the historic bonds between the two nations.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Somalia praised Cairo’s position as evidence of the “deep-rooted fraternal relations” that continue to guide their partnership.
“We particularly appreciate Egypt’s consistent support in strengthening security and building state institutions,” the Ministry said.
The announcement comes at a time when Somalia continues to face security threats from extremist groups while working to rebuild its institutions after decades of conflict.
Somalia and Egypt share centuries of political, cultural, and religious connections, rooted in their shared Arab and African identity. Cairo was among the first capitals to recognize Somalia’s independence in 1960, and the two countries have since cooperated within the Arab League, the African Union, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Egypt has played a visible role in Somalia’s education and state-building efforts. For decades, Egyptian universities have hosted Somali students, while Al-Azhar University and its scholars have provided religious education and training. Egyptian teachers were also among the earliest educators in Somali schools during the 1960s and 1970s, helping to strengthen cultural ties.
Analysts say Egypt’s support carries both symbolic and strategic significance. Symbolically, it demonstrates Arab solidarity with Somalia at a critical time. Strategically, it reflects Cairo’s interest in safeguarding Red Sea and Horn of Africa stability, which remain vital to Egypt’s national security.
Egypt also contributes to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), providing expertise and political backing for international stabilization efforts.
Nevertheless, diplomats in Mogadishu view the latest statement as part of a long-term partnership that extends beyond security. Both countries are expected to expand cooperation in trade, education, and diplomacy.
“Somalia values Egypt not only as a security partner but also as a country that has historically stood by our side in education, religion, and state-building,” a senior Somali diplomat told local media.
As Somalia works toward self-reliance in governance and security, Egypt’s support is seen as an important factor in ensuring stability and strengthening regional integration.
