Mogadishu-The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) highlights the following key activities during the past week:
1. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and other FGS leaders participated in the 65th anniversary commemoration of the independence of the Northern Regions of Somalia, marked on June 26, 1960.
2. The President congratulated the Somali people on this milestone, celebrating the 65th anniversary of the success of the Somali independence struggle.
3. He paid tribute to Somali freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s independence by laying a wreath at the Dhagax-Tuur monument in Mogadishu.
4. The President convened a consultative meeting with political leaders, including former presidents, former prime ministers, and other senior figures, led by former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.
5. He officially launched Somalia’s Vision 2060, underscoring the importance of enabling the Somali people to directly elect their leaders to promote peace, unity, and development.
6. The President received Mr. Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), on an official visit to Somalia.
7. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre congratulated the nation on the 65th anniversary of Northern Regions’ independence and called for renewed efforts to strengthen unity and cohesion.
8. The Prime Minister participated in the Vision 2060 launch event.
9. The prime Minister reaffirmed that returning to indirect elections is not an option, emphasizing the need to restore power to the Somali people.
10. The Prime Minister met with leaders of registered political parties to acknowledge their role in rebuilding Somalia’s democratic institutions.
11. Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama launched the 2024 Annual Report on Somalia’s financial progress.
12. Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe), met with political organizations for consultations.
13. Somalia’s bicameral parliament officially closed its sixth session.
14. The people of Djibouti celebrated their 48th Independence Day from French colonial rule.
15. Chairman of the Somali National Petroleum Authority, Eng. Abdiqadir Aden Mohamud, announced that official results of recent oil exploration will be released in July.
16. Somalia’s Ambassador to China, Dr. Hodan Osman Abdi, delivered a keynote speech marking 65 years of diplomatic relations between Somalia and China.
17. Minister of Defense Ahmed Moallim Fiqi met with Chinese Ambassador Wang Yu during his visit to the ministry.
18. NISA, in cooperation with international partners, conducted a successful operation in Gaycad, Hiran region, eliminating 13 Al-Shabaab militants.
19. Finance Minister Bihi Iman Ige hosted a farewell for Mrs. Kristina Svensson, outgoing World Bank Country Manager for Somalia, after five years of service.
20. The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation urged citizens to use national ID cards for ministry services.
21. Somalia strongly condemned the attack by the Islamic Republic of Iran on the State of Qatar.
22. Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Yusuf Mohamed Aden, attended the Arab Social and Economic Development Summit in Algeria.
23. Minister of Youth and Sports, Mohamed Abdulkadir Ali, received international referee Omar Abdulqadir Artan.
24. Banadir Governor and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), met with UNICEF Somalia Chief of Operations, Mads Oyen.
25. The Governor closed the Bnadir regional basketball tournament for district teams.
26. Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, Ali Yusuf Ali (Hoosh), opened the National Conference on Local Government Coordination.
27. Operations in Adan Yabal dismantled two Al-Shabaab facilities used for weapon storage and vehicle modification.
28. Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali held talks with Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Elyahya.
29. Minister Abdisalam also participated in the 51st OIC Council of Foreign Ministers session in Istanbul, Türkiye.
30. Health Minister Dr. Ali Haji Adam bid farewell to UNICEF Somalia Representative Wafaa Saeed at the end of her term in the country.
31. Somali National Army, supported by Uganda’s UPDF, captured strategic areas of Sabiib and Caanoole.
32. The Foreign Minister participated in an Arab Foreign Ministers’ meeting regarding the Iran-Israel conflict.
33. Somali forces continued to make gains against Al-Shabaab, liberating Masaajid Cali Gadud in Middle Shabelle.
