MOGADISHU – The Chairperson of the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC), Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan, has announced the completion of voter registration for the upcoming “one-person, one-vote” elections in Banaadir region.
According to the Commission, close to one million residents of Mogadishu have successfully registered and will be eligible to cast their ballots in the historic local elections.
“The Mayor of Mogadishu and the city council members will be elected on October 30, and citizens will head to polling stations to cast their votes,” Abdikarin said during the announcement.
He added that the final voters’ roll will be made public on September 27, ensuring transparency and readiness ahead of election day.
“This is a historic moment for the people of Mogadishu. We are pleased to confirm that nearly one million people have registered, reflecting the citizens’ commitment to exercising their democratic rights,” the NIEC Chairperson emphasized.
The upcoming polls mark a significant step in Somalia’s long-delayed efforts to implement universal suffrage and strengthen democratic governance at the local level.
