Nairobi – The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Kenya on Saturday commemorated the 65th anniversary of Somalia’s Independence Day, celebrating the historic liberation of the Somali territories on June 26, 1960.

The event, part of the broader Independence Week celebrations, drew over 100 ambassadors and diplomats from various embassies and consulates across Kenya.

Senior officials from key United Nations agencies, including UN-Habitat, UNDP, and UNHCR, also attended the event, reflecting the international community’s recognition of Somalia’s continued progress and strategic partnerships.

In his address, Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle, praised the strong and growing bilateral relations between Somalia and Kenya. He highlighted progress in security cooperation, trade, education, and economic development.

“Today’s commemoration not only honors the courageous struggle for our nation’s freedom, but also provides an opportunity to reflect on our diplomatic achievements and the strengthening of ties with our neighbors, particularly Kenya,” Ambassador Jibril said.

The embassy emphasized that such occasions are vital in reinforcing diplomatic relations and enhancing Somalia’s image on the global stage. The ceremony featured vibrant cultural performances, traditional Somali music, and a visual presentation showcasing Somalia’s history and the struggle for independence.
