Mogadishu – Somalia’s Minister of Finance, Bihi Iman Cige, on Thursday hosted the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Somalia, Charles King, for a high-level visit to the Mogadishu Port, aimed at evaluating the country’s ongoing efforts to modernize its domestic revenue systems.

The UK delegation, which included senior officials from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), was received alongside key Somali government stakeholders, including the Director General of Revenue, the Port Manager of Mogadishu, and the Director of Customs. The officials provided a comprehensive briefing on recent advancements in the country’s digital tax and customs infrastructure.

Central to the visit was an assessment of the Somali Customs Automated System (SOMCAS) — a UK-supported digital platform designed to enhance transparency, improve efficiency, and strengthen collaboration between the Ministry of Finance and the business community.

The system facilitates real-time coordination on customs operations and tax compliance, marking a significant step forward in Somalia’s fiscal reform strategy.

Ambassador King commended Somalia’s commitment to reform and reiterated the UK’s support for strengthening public financial management and increasing domestic revenue mobilization.

“The UK remains a strong partner in Somalia’s journey toward self-reliance,” said Ambassador King. “We are proud to support initiatives like SOMCAS that are helping build a more accountable and transparent revenue system.”

The visit underscores growing international backing for Somalia’s fiscal transformation, as the country works toward long-term economic stability and improved service delivery.
