GENEVA, (HAN) — The Minister of Family Affairs and Human Rights of the Federal Government of Somalia, Ambassador Khadiija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, held a series of bilateral meetings in Geneva with several ambassadors accredited to the United Nations Office.

The meetings are part of Somalia’s ongoing diplomatic campaign in Geneva, coinciding with the 60th Session of the UN Human Rights Council.

In her first meeting, Minister Al-Makhzoumi met with H.E. Naser Abdullah Alhayen, Ambassador of the State of Kuwait to Geneva. She also held discussions with H.E. Dr. Hend Abdulrahman Al Muftah, Ambassador of the State of Qatar, and H.E. Burak Akçapar, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey.

The ambassadors expressed their countries’ strong support for Somalia’s efforts to reclaim its role and sovereignty in fulfilling national human rights obligations — an area the country had been absent from for nearly three decades.

These engagements form part of the broader strategy by the Federal Government of Somalia to restore its active participation within the United Nations system and to promote human rights, justice, and social equality.

The UN Human Rights Council vote is scheduled for Wednesday, October 8, 2025, where Somalia is vying for membership. The ongoing diplomatic outreach led by Minister Al-Makhzoumi plays a key role in bolstering Somalia’s candidacy.
