MOGADISHU — Somalia’s police chief on Thursday deployed special units to designated security posts across Mogadishu to ensure the safety of upcoming local council elections in the Banadir region, authorities said.
Police Commissioner Maj. Gen. Asad Osman Abdullahi, accompanied by his deputy, Maj. Gen. Osman Abdullahi, oversaw the deployment of officers assigned to secure polling areas and key locations throughout the capital ahead of voting scheduled for Friday, the 25th.
The officers will be stationed at various points across Mogadishu to protect voters and election personnel and to prevent any acts that could disrupt the electoral process, police officials said.
Addressing senior officers and rank-and-file personnel, the police chief urged them to carry out their duties with professionalism, integrity and a strong sense of responsibility, emphasizing that public safety and the national interest must remain the top priority during the election period.
Abdullahi also instructed police to provide special assistance to elderly voters, people with disabilities and mothers, to help ensure they are able to cast their ballots safely and without difficulty.
The deployment is part of a broader security plan aimed at tightening security in the capital and ensuring that the Banadir local council elections proceed peacefully and transparently, authorities said.
