MOGADISHU — Somalia’s president is making a one-day trip to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and is expected to return later the same day, officials said Wednesday.

The visit comes as the Somali leader faces mounting political pressure from Western governments, which is reportedly being channeled through neighboring countries to address ongoing tensions in Somalia.

The country is currently grappling with political instability over proposed constitutional amendments and a new electoral commission. Opposition groups in Jubaland and Puntland have strongly rejected the changes, saying they were implemented without consultation.

The president departed from the hangar section of Aden Adde International Airport, accompanied by senior officials and security personnel. A statement from the presidency described the trip as “politically and diplomatically significant, aimed at strengthening relations with neighboring countries and addressing international concerns.”

Political analysts said the visit is part of the president’s efforts to ease domestic tensions, particularly around electoral processes and constitutional reform. While the official agenda has not been publicly released, he is expected to meet with leaders from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and Ethiopian officials to discuss regional security and political cooperation.
